What does "AI-native" actually mean for a B2B services business?
By Baidy Barton, Founder of Tailwind Growth ·
The short answer
An AI-native services business is designed around AI from the ground up. AI handles the research, admin, follow-up and pipeline tracking behind the scenes, so people spend their time on the client relationship, expertise and judgement. It isn't adding ChatGPT to an old workflow, and it isn't replacing the people clients are actually buying.
AI-native isn't the same as using AI
Every agency and consultant is calling themselves AI-native right now. Most of them mean they've added ChatGPT to their workflow. That's not the same thing.
AI-native means the way you deliver is designed around AI from the start, not retrofitted. In a growth system, that means AI handles the research, the personalisation, the follow-up sequencing and the pipeline tracking that used to need either a full sales team or hours of the founder's time.
The margin hype misses the point
There's a lot of talk about AI-native services as a new utopia: use AI to automate the work traditionally done by grads, keep charging the same, and enjoy 60–80% better margins.
I agree there's a huge opportunity. But a lot of the people saying this have never operated a services company. Most fail to recognise that an unbeatable customer experience is where the true value and differentiation lie. No one's going to keep buying if you leverage the heck out of AI and deliver a rubbish outcome.
On margins, I expect downward price pressure, as clients expect you to be more efficient in your delivery. Ultimately I think we'll see a more fragmented market, with more phenomenal boutique players that start eating Big Four consulting's lunch.
Good AI should be invisible
Good AI use shouldn't be in your client's face. It should be seamless and behind the scenes: automation, background research, enabling processes.
Don't use it for your differentiation, which is usually your voice and your point of view. That's the part clients are paying for.
What AI-native looks like at Tailwind Growth
When I was brainstorming Tailwind in the car on the way to the beach, my thesis was that it had to be "people first, AI-native". The "people first" part has been proven true every single day since.
In practice, AI handles the 70% of winning work that was always admin. You handle the 30% that needs you: the relationship, the expertise, the judgement. A solo founder with the right system can run a pipeline that used to need three or four people. Not because AI replaces the human connection, but because it handles everything that isn't human connection.
Frequently asked questions
What does AI-native mean?
A business or service designed around AI from the ground up, rather than one that has added AI tools to an existing workflow.
Will AI replace professional services firms?
Unlikely. AI will take over much of the admin and junior work, but clients still buy expertise, judgement and relationships. Expect more efficient boutique firms and price pressure on routine work.
What is an AI-native B2B growth partner?
A growth partner whose system uses AI for prospecting research, follow-up and pipeline management, combined with a senior person who handles strategy and relationships. Tailwind Growth is one example, built for Australian B2B services founders.
