What are the alternatives to a marketing agency for B2B client acquisition?

By Baidy Barton, Founder of Tailwind Growth ·

The short answer

For most B2B services firms, the better alternatives sit closer to the sale: advocates and past-client referrals, partnerships, direct outreach, being in the room at industry events, and a pipeline system that follows every opportunity up. Marketing is great at amplifying those engines once they're running. It rarely replaces them.

Why marketing alone rarely fills a B2B pipeline

I know a business owner who spent money on a marketing campaign that produced plenty of traffic, but no leads. It helped with visibility, but none of it converted, and SMEs can't afford awareness that doesn't turn into meetings.

What actually moved the needle? Partners including her in RFPs unprompted. Past clients personally referring her to new businesses.

1. Advocates and past clients

Your happiest clients are your best acquisition channel. Make it easy for them to refer you, stay in touch after the work ends, and invest in the customer experience while you're delivering. In B2B, the experience is the marketing.

2. Partnerships

Firms that serve the same clients as you, but don't compete with you, can bring you into opportunities you'd never see otherwise. A handful of good partners who think of you first is worth more than a lot of impressions.

3. Direct outreach, reframed

Most weeks I reach out to people I don't know to grab a coffee. I reckon 85% say yes. For years I didn't recognise that as cold outreach, because I'd reframed it as reaching out to someone I admire, am interested in, or can learn from. Before that reframe, I was terrified of rejection.

It totally is cold outreach, though, and it's one of the most underrated growth levers there is. Most people avoid it because it gives them the ick. All you have to do is reframe it.

4. Being in the room

Organising the coffee, attending the after-hours event, getting out in market, connecting in real life at the conference: that's the work. Being the best at delivering will only take your business so far. After that, it's your ability to build relationships with the people who'll matter to your business later.

5. A system that follows everything up

None of these channels work if opportunities go cold because you were busy delivering. A simple, repeatable pipeline, with clear next steps for every conversation, is what turns activity into clients.

When a marketing agency does make sense

Marketing absolutely has a place. But B2B businesses should get their inbound and outbound engines running and nail the customer experience first, because advocates and partnerships offer a higher return in the early days. Get that humming, then turn to marketing to amplify it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a marketing agency worth it for a small B2B services firm?

Often not as a first step. Agencies are strong at visibility, but small B2B firms usually win clients through relationships, referrals and partnerships. Get those working first, then use marketing to amplify them.

What's the cheapest way to get B2B clients?

Past-client referrals, partnerships and direct outreach to people you'd genuinely like to meet cost mostly time, and convert far better than paid awareness for most professional services firms.

Is Tailwind Growth a marketing agency?

No. Tailwind Growth focuses entirely on client acquisition and pipeline, not brand awareness or ad campaigns. It combines a fractional growth leader with an AI-powered growth system, for around a third of the cost of a traditional agency.

Fractional CRO & Growth Leader

Tailwind Growth is the alternative: a fractional growth leader and an AI-powered system focused on winning clients, not impressions.
